A cracked tile in a Florida home usually means impact, a shifting or hollow subfloor underneath, or movement in the slab — and matching a replacement tile is often the trickiest part.
Plan it — not an emergency.
Common causes:
• A heavy impact or dropped object cracking a single tile
• A hollow spot or poor bond under the tile flexing underfoot
• Subfloor or slab movement stressing the tile and grout
• Repeated cracking in a line, which points to something below
• Replacing the tile without asking why it cracked
• Cracks running in a straight line across several tiles — a subfloor clue
• Hollow-sounding tiles nearby that are poorly bonded
• No plan to source a matching tile before starting
• No proof of insurance or a track record — Florida doesn't license this trade, so those are what protect you
Why did my tile crack?
Most often it's impact, or a void under the tile that let it flex until it broke. If several tiles crack in a line, or cracking keeps happening, the subfloor or slab underneath may be moving, and that needs addressing before a replacement will hold. A single impact crack is simpler.
Can one cracked tile be replaced?
Usually yes, if a matching tile can be found — which is the hard part, since dye lots and discontinued styles vary. A pro removes the broken tile and grout carefully, sets a match, and re-grouts. If the cause is movement below, that has to be handled too, or the new tile cracks as well.
Tile flooring (per sqft, installed): $3,500–$8,000 (typical ~$5,500)

Florida does NOT issue a state license for this trade (local licensing was preempted for most non-structural trades). What protects you instead: general-liability insurance, workers’ comp, and a real track record — exactly what our verification checks.
Whether a permit applies depends on scope — when in doubt, ask the county building department before work starts.
Basis: HB 735 (2021) local-license preemption.
